Do we need to live in Abu Dhabi to get married there?

No. Law No. 14/2021 opened the Civil Family Court to residents and tourists alike, provided you enter the UAE legally and meet the eligibility criteria. Here’s how ADJD treats different residency profiles.

Tourists & Short Stays

Many couples fly in for a long weekend, complete the ceremony, and handle attestation before returning home. ADJD only asks for proof of lawful entry (visa or stamp) and a travel plan so case officers can prioritise express slots.

Residents of Other Emirates

Living in Dubai, Sharjah, or abroad does not disqualify you. Decision No. 8/2022 gives the Civil Family Court territorial jurisdiction over anyone who chooses Abu Dhabi for the ceremony, including remote applicants.

Remote Coaching Cases

Couples who cannot travel immediately can start the portal process, attend video calls, and confirm ADJD requirements from abroad. Once approval arrives, they schedule a final trip solely for the ceremony and attestation.

Proof of Jurisdiction

Attach hotel confirmations, tenancy contracts, or sponsor letters when prompted. These documents reassure ADJD that you will be available when the ceremony date is issued.
